calendar of events: perth + fremantle
Whether you fancy a play, live music or cheering on one of our sporting teams, there is plenty happening in Perth.
Live performance venues include the Crown Theatre just east of the city centre at Burswood, Riverside Theatre at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and the distinctive Perth Arena, a brand new indoor venue, complete with retractable roof. The Perth Cultural Precinct in Northbridge is home to the Art Gallery of WA, the WA Museum, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and the new State Theatre Centre which features the Heath Ledger Theatre.
The magnificent His Majesty’s Theatre is an Edwardian building that has been restored to its former grandeur and makes a splendid performance venue for the WA Ballet and WA Opera companies. There are several performance spaces and backstage tours are available. Renowned as having exceptional acoustics, the Perth Concert Hall has played host to some of the world’s great classical musical ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. This is where the WA Symphony Orchestra regularly perform.
Other live performance venues in and around Perth include the Regal Theatre in Subiaco and the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley; both examples of restored Art Deco buildings.
With a climate like ours it’s easy to understand why we prefer our entertainment outdoors in summertime. There are many outdoor cinemas so grab some friends and head to the Northbridge Piazza in the heart of town, the Somerville Theatre at UWA, Moonlight Cinema at Kings Park, Movies by Burswood or Camelot Outdoor Cinema in Mosman Park.
